Not sure about the marketing copy you or ChatGPT produced?
As a business owner, your written communication needs to project a professional image. But if writing isn’t your strong suit (like maths isn’t mine), it’s important to get an experienced (human) eye to review your words so you get them right, first time. Proofreading and copyediting: What’s the difference?
Copyediting
A copyeditor (AKA sub-editor) reworks ‘raw copy’ to:
- fix grammar glitches
- fact check spelling of people and place names, event dates, URLs, phone numbers etc
- improve clarity and flow of ideas – do the paragraphs follow a logical order?
- cut or rewrite copy to fit a page layout or to reduce waffle and tighten copy flow
- ensure consistent brand tone of voice.

Proofreading
This is the final step in the editorial/publishing process. A proofreader checks for:
- typos, spelling errors and correct punctuation
- consistency of document style and formatting: headings, subheadings, headers and footers, spacing (between words and paragraphs), bullet lists, correct pagination.
As an experienced copyeditor and proofreader, I’ve worked on:
- print and online magazines
- annual reports
- lead magnets
- PowerPoint presentations
- case studies
- web copy and blogs
- non-fiction book manuscripts (including business books)
Improving AI-generated content to engage humans better
Well-written copy builds trust in your brand and expertise, and helps build relationships with your customers. While AI can help you quickly whip up copy for a web page, blog post or social media update, ChatGPT and other AI apps tend to churn out content that sounds overly enthusiastic, cliched or clunky.
The better you prompt it, the better it will eventually deliver. But it often still lacks an emotional depth and humanness – which is what makes humans connect to your words.
Some more reasons your AI-produced copy needs a human content editor:
- AI hallucinations are still an issue, so if your content is fact-based, getting a human to review it brings accuracy and peace of mind.
- Because your end user is a human, it makes sense for a human to double-check AI output.
- AI can’t grasp context and nuance, such as brand voice, and it can resort to harmful stereotypes.
- If your business is in a regulated industry, like healthcare, finance or law, using a human to check your AI-generated content is even more important.
- AI transcription still hasn’t nailed grammar and structure elements like correct paragraph breaks and punctuation.
So, let me review your AI-generated text and restore the humanness. I’ve edited corporate publications, blog articles, social posts and website copy that AI didn’t get quite right.
